After turn on your computer, you can choose which OS you want to boot into. You have a few seconds to make your choice, or the system will boot into its default OS, either Linux or Windows(nt). Use Up or Down Key to select your choice.
There is one exception though. If you turn off your PC using the "standby" option from Windows, Windows will be loaded immediately in a few seconds. This is a fast way to turn on and off your PC if your use Windows mostly.
In linux environment, you can easily use telnet, ssh just like you are with the SGI workstations. By setting the DISPLAY environment variable correctly, you can run most programs under telnet or ssh session of SGI cluster.
In Windows environment, you should see the icon "Dell Server" and "putty" on your desktop. The former is for you to connect to Dell Server just like those old Neo Stations. The latter is for opening telnet or ssh sessions to convex or SGI workstations. If you cannot see these icons, read on...
Setup Dell Server Connection:
1. Start->Program->Citrix ICA Client->Citrix
Program Neighbourhood
2. Click on "Add ICA Connection"
bring up "Add new Ica Connection " Dialogbox.
3. Click "Next"
4. Enter "Dell Server" on the first
Text box, enter "cuhhmd.hhmi.columbia.edu" on the third text box, click
"next"
5. Use default, Click "next"
6. Leave them blank, Click "next"
7. Uncheck "Use Default", set color
to "high color", set "Window Size" to 800x600 or "custom" at "996"x"744",
click "next"
8. Leave them blank, Click "next"
9. Click "Finish"
10. Drag the new ICA icon to your
desktop. Done.
You can access Dell Server by double
click the "Dell Server" Icon on your desktop.
Use Telnet Client under Windows:
On your desktop, there is icon named
"putty" which is a powerful telnet and SSH client. I generated a registry
file for you to easily configure the access to convex and sgi workstations.
Use your File Browser (start->programs->accessories->explorer) browse to
c:\settings, you can see a file named 'telnetsettings'. Double click it.
After that, after you open your putty, you can see there are some presetted
connection to convex, cuhhxa, ... Double click on it to connect to these
computers.
